Results for the 5th February

Greetings from the first Service Rifle competition held on 5th February 2023! It was a fine, mild and sunny day with very little breeze, perfect conditions for our seven shooters to showcase their skills.

We were excited to welcome two ‘new’ shooters, Greg returning after a break and Graham for his first Military competition, along with five of our regulars. Competitors used a variety of rifles, including M38 Husqvarna’s chambered in 6.5x55 mm, Mark III .303’s, a 1903 A3 Springfield chambered in 30-06, and a Mosin Nagant 7.62 x 54R.

The shooters started with the first targets set up at 50 yards, and David called "Shooters to the bench, please." After the first five shots, the targets were collected and scored, revealing early leaders Brett and Scott, both scoring 50.1, closely followed by David on 50.

Next, we moved on to the second target, 10 shots at 100 yards and a possible score of 100.5. Seems the target crew were a little rusty after the festive break, forgetting to move frames from 50 to 100 yards, but a quick range closure had the situation remedied. At 100 yards, the groups began to open up, making it more difficult to score well. However, Greg and Scott both managed a score of 99.3. Although not admitting it, David may have felt the pressure and was unable to keep pace, falling away with his 96.0.

The third and final target was moved out to 200 yards, (a challenging distance without the aid of a scope) for another 5 shots and a possible 50.5 points on offer. Scott managed to score 42, followed by David with 36 and Greg with 35.

The final results were: 1st place – Scott McKee 191.4 2nd place - Greg Hannon 182.5 3rd place - David Wade 182.0

The scores were very close at the top, which made the event even more thrilling. The best possible score was 250.25, and we were impressed to see some fantastic scores achieved by our shooters. It came down to the final target to decide the placings.

In the factory class, Jeff Robards secured the first position with a score of 249.09 with his ever-reliable Tikka, followed by Justin Everett, (after a slow start) on 246.09 and Adam Lowrie coming in third with 244.05 for his first time out – great effort. In the target class, Tony Gestier took home the gold with an impressive score of 250.15, closely followed by Harvey Robards on 250.06 and third was Scott McKee on 249.09. Download the Scoresheet.

Looking ahead to 29 and 30 July, being the 5th weekend of the month there are no shooting competitions. The following weekend, 5 and 6 August, sees the Wagga club hosting our monthly shotgun shoot on Saturday with a 1:00 pm start and on Sunday there is a Military shoot on the benchrest range with a 10:00 am start.

In addition to this we have our Blue Heeler Classic major fly shoot coming up on 19 and 20 August. If you are not already committed to helping run the event but would like to volunteer some of your time, we would love to hear from you – just contact a committee member to be involved.

We'd like to thank all our members and friends for their continued support, and we're looking forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events. Wishing you all the best!
